Overview

Program description:
The research institute, which possesses state-of-the-art laboratories as of the second half of 2005, carries out successful fundamental horticultural research, apart from units of horticultural disciplines that have been operating successfully for years. Research fields and the profile of the horticultural programme are also linked to international co-operations as of 2011, through the environmentally friendly horticultural production and crop protection research programmes of the European Union. In addition, the Experimental Research Unit in Pallag and the Research Institute of Nyíregyháza, which are parts of the Centre for Agricultural Science of the University of Debrecen, have been serving as the background of R&D research for decades, where fruit, vegetable and ornamental research is being carried out. Important research areas are the following: development of the biological/genetic background of fruit production; production of fruit and vegetable products with high antioxidant activity, selection of fruit varieties/clones rich in biologically active substances; analysis of bioactive materials in prioritised vegetable species; breeding of annual flowers and green bean varieties resistant to drought and atmospheric drought; production of new ornamental genera and hybrids; determination and extension of the biological potential of new, alternative horticultural plant species; in vitro propagation of herbaceous and woody plants; development of fruit-production technology (phyto-technology, environment-friendly yield regulation, rational crop management and crop plant protection); maintenance of rational land use and the productivity of soils (modern, environmentally friendly agro-technology and nutrient management, soil-friendly irrigation), analysis of the effects of soil life, soil structure and tillage on the absorbability and utilization of water and nutrients; development and harmonization of integrated production systems in the horticultural sector; comparison of environmentally friendly production and crop protection systems, development of their technology for practical use.
