Program description:
Los estudiantes de MA deben participar en una formación realizada enteramente en español, sobre literatura y cultura hispánicas. La formación de Segundo grado o Máster (MA) concluye con la preparación y la defensa exitosa de un trabajo final de carrera (tesina).

En este nivel de formación, los estudiantes
• estudian los temas actuales de la investigación de la literatura hispánica (historia de la literatura desde la época medieval hasta la actualidad, autores españoles y latinoamericanos, etc.);
• practican el análisis científico de la literatura;
• se familiarizan con la metodología de la investigación literaria;
• obtienen experiencia en investigación;
• aprenden las diferentes técnicas de composición de texto en español;
• mejoran sus destrezas orales de español;
• llegan a una comprensión más profunda de la lingüística y estudian los campos actuales de la investigación lingüística (por ejemplo, lingüística simultánea, historia del lenguaje, lingüística descriptiva, lingüística textual, lexicología, fraseología, sociolingüística, etc.);
• obtienen experiencia en traducción.

MA students shall participate in a thorough training in the Spanish language, literature, and culture. The MA is concluded by the preparation and successful defence of a thesis.

During the training students will:
gain knowledge of contemporary questions in Spanish literature research (history of literature from medieval times up until present, Hispanic literature, etc.);
obtain practice in scientific literature analysis;
acquaint themselves with the methodology of literature research;
gain experience in research;
learn about the various techniques of Spanish text composition;
improve oral skills in the foreign language;
get a deeper understanding of linguistics, study current fields of linguistic research (e.g., simultaneous linguistics, language history, descriptive linguistics, textual linguistics, lexicology, phraseology, sociolinguistics, etc.);
gain experience in translation.
The aim of this course is to train high-level specialists capable of meeting the specific demands of the labour market in the fields of cultural and intercultural exchange. In addition to local, national or international authorities in the public sector, it is important to underline the growing need for Spanish graduates in the private sector, e.g. with multinational companies.

The training will also prepare the student to continue in one of the Doctoral Schools of the Faculty.
Our graduates find positions mainly in the sectors of education and research, tourism management, banking and finance, and intercultural communications. Our graduates finish the program with a high level of Portuguese knowledge. Many of them work as language teachers in public schools or language schools, as editors or literary translators, others find positions in the tourism industry, media and marketing, at governmental institutions or ministries, such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Foreign Trade, and at international companies.

The Master program will allow student to explore different areas of research, such as Spanish Golden Age, Spanish American Colonial Times to contemporary literature, to practise the scientific analysis of discourse and literary texts, to conduct elaborate literary research, to form a clear and informed argument reflecting a deep linguistic understanding (synchrony and diachrony, theoretical and applied linguistics).

Entry requirements: A C1-level, internationally recognized language certificate in the target language or a diploma in the target language. A bachelor degree in Romance Philology, Specialized in Spanish Studies is also required.

Entrance exam description: The application documents are processed by the Department of International Affairs and then forwarded to the department responsible for the given degree programme. The department checks the documents and organizes an interview by telephone, online (e.g. Skype) or in person. After the entrance interview, the department comes to a decision and informs the Department of International Affairs.

Career opportunities

MA level studies in humanities within the modern philology field, especially in the case of the Spanish studies, which consider the needs of the labour market, produce professionals who meet the increasingly growing requirements of intellectual occupations mostly related to services (field of arts, social sciences track, journalism, text composition, translation, drafting of tenders, etc.), while at the same time prepare them for broader topics for assistant positions related to humanities. There is an increasing demand for graduates of the study fields of humanities, irrespective of their study tracks, who are equipped with general knowledge, empathy, and a high level of communication skills, for positions of deputy manager, expert of human policy, etc. Some of our graduates continue studies at a doctoral level.
