Gál Ferenc University is a state recognised higher education institution maintained by the Diocese of Szeged-Csanád. Its historical predecessor was the Csanád Capitular School, already in existence in the 1060s. Gál Ferenc University is the successor of the Inter-Diocesan Seminary founded by Gyula Glattfelder in 1930, the latter Philosophical-Theological College. Gál Ferenc University has a Theological Faculty in Szeged, the Faculty of Education in Szarvas, the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences in Gyula, and the Faculty of Economics in Békéscsaba. The College also maintains  vocational secondary schools in Békés and in Gyula. The University runs an agricultural centre and experimental farm in Mezőtúr.

Gál Ferenc University’s religious study programmes train theologians, catechists, cantors, church historians, and co-workers for church and charity institutions. The secular study programmes are also committed to Christian values in the training of teachers, educators  and other professionals in the fields of health care, social work economics .
